As a student participant, contender and winner of coveted awards, he was exemplary; qualities of leadership were exhibited among the students he influenced as a coach, administrator and educator; in the local and wider communities of learning and leadership; his peers laud him.
In 1978 the W.F. Mitchell Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards were created to honor his contributions.
