His extended involvement in athletics began in 1916 when he acted as a Student Manager of the OAC Basketball Team which won the Intermediate Ontario Amateur Athletic Association Championship. During his ten years as coach between 1924 and 1934, his teams won championships seven times. Throughout the years, he was deeply involved in all aspects of the Athletics program. The highlight of his service to athletics came in 1957 when through his influence and drive an Athletics Centre second to none in Canada was built.
