Tony Calverley was one of the hardest running backs and best punters to don the Gryphon colours. He was a member of the Dominion Championship teams in 1947 and 1948 and the Intermediate Intercollegiate champions in 1949. A headline in the Guelph Mercury once stated, ‘Tony Shines’. Some of the articles referred to Tony as “a standout for the winners compiling 126 yards in running plays” and “Calverley rallied the Redmen several times with his reckless plunging to light the spark with a bolt through the line for 22 yards up to his own 32.”
