Justin Allen (GOLF) & Jacqueline Giles (GOLF) Named BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week

Both Gryphon golfers claim individual bronze medals at the 2022 OUA Golf Championships

GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2022-23 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our "BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" series. This week's "BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" recipients are Justin Allen (men's golf) and Jacqueline Giles (women's golf) for the period ending October 16, 2022.

Justin Allen (Men's Golf)

Justin Allen's outstanding OUA golf career was capped off this past weekend with yet another standout performance. Over the course of two days in Ottawa (Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15) at the 2022 OUA Golf Championships, Justin Allen finished T3 in a field of 75 golfers from across the province. The 23-year-old Etobicoke native, who is currently in his fifth-year of studies (marketing management) at the University of Guelph, opened up Round 1 at Hylands Golf Club in Ottawa with an impressive +2 (74). Allen would follow that up with an even better round on Saturday (Oct. 15), shooting +1 (73) to finish the 36-hole conference championship tournament with a cumulative score of +3 (147), tying him for 3rd in the men's individual scoring race alongside McMaster's, Kavith Ranchagoda. Allen was just one stroke back of 2nd-place (behind Laurier's Jonathon Cramton).

Over the course of Justin Allen's outstanding Gryphon golf career, the marketing management major has now earned OUA First Team All-Star status at each of the past three OUA Golf Championships (T3 in 2022, 3rd in 2021 & T2 in 2019). Allen, who was named captain of the Gryphons men's golf team for the 2022 season, has played a key role on the U of G men's golf team since arriving on campus in 2018, and has also impressed at the national level, including this past June in Quebec, where he placed 6th in a field of the 101 best collegiate golfers from across the country.

With Justin Allen's T3 finish leading the way for the Gryphons this past weekend in Ottawa, the Gryphons men's golf team was able to claim OUA bronze, finishing 3rd (out of 15 schools) in the overall men's team standings, finishing just one stroke ahead of Waterloo and Toronto for the final spot on the podium. It marks the second consecutive season in which the Gryphons men's golf team has reached the OUA podium after also claiming bronze in the team standings in 2021. While this past weekend marked Justin Allen's final appearance as a Gryphon at the OUA level, the three-time OUA First Team All-Star will have one last opportunity to represent the University of Guelph in the spring of 2023 where he is expected to compete at the Canadian University/College Golf Championships. Allen has twice been named Gryphon Athlete of the Week this season, after having also earned the title back in late September.

Jacqueline Giles (Women's Golf)

For a second time this season, Gryphons women's golfer, Jacqueline Giles, has earned Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours thanks to her impressive performance this past weekend (Oct. 14-15) in Ottawa at the 2022 Golf Championships. Giles, a 19-year-old Georgetown, Ontario native currently in her second year at the University of Guelph, finished 3rd out of 42 golfers at the 2022 OUA Golf Championships in Ottawa, finishing just 1 stroke back of 2nd and three strokes back of 1st in the women's individual scoring. In doing so, Jacqueline earns OUA First Team All-Star status for a second consecutive season, after making school history a season ago when she became the first ever Gryphons women's golfer to be crowned individual scoring champion at an OUA Golf Championship.

Giles, a molecular biology and genetics major at U of G, posted impressive rounds in back-to-back days at the 2022 OUA Golf Championships, opening up competition on Friday (Oct. 14) with a round of 80. On Saturday (Oct. 15), Giles produced the second-best, final round score of any golfer in the field, firing a 76 over the final 18 holes of the tournament (only Western's, Lexie McKay, had a better final round score with a 75). Giles two-day total of 156 helped her reach the OUA podium with an individual bronze medal. With Giles leading the way, the Gryphons women's team, comprised of Jacqueline Giles, Faith Hertner, Keira Cotter and Ella Oster, finished 6th out of 11 schools in the final team standings. Jacqueline's individual 3rd-place finish at the 2022 OUA Golf Championships is the latest impressive result in what has been a standout sophomore season for the Georgetown native, who posted multiple top-5 finishes throughout the Gryphons 2022 tournament schedule.
