GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2022-23 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our "BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" series. This week's "BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" recipients are
Kobe Faust (men's rugby) and
Jacqueline Giles (women's golf) for the period ending October 2, 2022.
Kobe Faust (Men's Rugby)
Gryphons men's rugby fullback,
Kobe Faust, takes home
Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after leading his team to a decisive 50-12 road win over the Trent Excalibur on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Faust, a 20-year-old marketing management major at the University of Guelph, recorded 1 try and added 4 converts on Saturday night in Peterborough, helping the Gryphons men's rugby team remain undefeated in 2022, improving to 3-0 on the season. The Uxbridge, Ontario native is currently in his third-year of studies at U of G, and second-year of eligibility with the men's rugby team. Last season, Faust was forced to sit out the majority of the 2021 season due to an injury sustained in the second week of the season, a season which ultimately ended with the Gryphons hoisting the Turner Trophy as OUA champions (the fourth OUA title in program history). Now, the 6'1" fullback is at full health and making major contributions on the pitch for the Gryphons, including taking on kicking duties following the departure of 2021 OUA All-Star,
Aria Keshoofy. This past summer,
Kobe Faust also impressed on the international stage, representing Canada at the U20 level and helping lead the Canadians to a victory over the Chilean U20 national team. Through three games this season with the Gryphons, Faust has recorded 1 try, 12 conversions and 1 penalty goal. The Gryphons men's rugby team returns to action on Saturday, October 8 with a 1pm home matchup versus the McMaster Marauders.
Jacqueline Giles (Women's Golf)
Gryphons women's golfer,
Jacqueline Giles, takes home
Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after an impressive showing at the 2022 Waterloo/Laurier Women's Invitational. Over the course of the two-day event (Oct. 1 & 2) at the Cambridge Golf Club, Giles posted rounds of 76 and 80 to finish T-2nd in the overall individual standings.

Giles, a molecular biology and genetics major currently in her second-year at the University of Guelph, finished the event tied alongside Brock's Melanie Burgess for 2nd, just 1 shot back of first-place finisher Lexie McKay (a former BYU golfer and current Western Mustang). Jacqueline's opening round score of 76 on Saturday, October 1 at Cambridge Golf Club was the lowest round posted by any individual on the women's side during the two-day tournament. With Jacqueline's performance leading the way, the Gryphons women's golf team placed 4th out of 10 schools in the overall team standings. The 19-year-old Georgetown native is coming off of a sensational freshman season in 2021, where she became the
first ever Gryphons women's golfer to be crowned OUA individual champion, finishing 1st in the field at Cherry Downs Golf Club in Pickering for the 2021 OUA Golf Championships. Giles has continued her excellent play in 2022, posting multiple top-5 finishes during the Gryphons 2022 tournament schedule. Giles and the rest of the Gryphon varsity golfers are competing today (Oct. 3) in the 2022 Gryphon Invitational, with the one-day event hosted at Guelph Lakes Golf & Country Club. The Gryphon golf teams will then head to Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor this weekend (Oct. 7-8) for the 2022 Windsor Invitational. The 2022 OUA golf season will then culminate in Ottawa at Hylands Golf Club, October 14-16, where
Jacqueline Giles will look to successfully defend her OUA individual scoring title.
