GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2022-23 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our "BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" series. This week's recipients are
Olivia Brown (women's soccer) and
Owen McKee (men's soccer) have been named BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 5, 2022.
Olivia Brown (Women's Soccer)
Second-year forward,
Olivia Brown, takes home Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after helping lead the Gryphons women's soccer team to a convincing, 7-0 road win over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday (Sept. 4) in the opening game of Guelph's 2022 regular season schedule.

Brown, a Guelph native and human kinetics major, scored twice in Sault Ste. Marie, including the opening goal of the match, which came just three minutes into the first half. The 6'0" forward would add another in the 53rd minute, to help the Gryphons get their 2022 campaign off to a flying start. Brown is coming off a strong rookie season in 2021, in which she scored twice during her freshman season as a Gryphon. Brown and the Gryphons will now return home for their first home match of the 2022 campaign, with Guelph set to host the McMaster Marauders on Friday night (6pm) at the University of Guelph's Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Owen McKee (Men's Soccer)
Fourth-year biological science major,
Owen McKee, takes home Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after netting a hat trick in the Gryphons men's soccer 8-0 season opening win over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday (Sept. 4). McKee accounted for the first two Gryphon goals, scoring in the 22
' and 47' minutes, respectively, and then completed the hat trick in the 80' minute as part of Guelph's dominant season-opening display. McKee's three goals rank him second among the OUA's leading scorers, with only Sebastian Guerreiri of the Waterloo Warriors having more (Guerreiri has 4 goals, but has played in 2 games compared to McKee's 1).

A season ago,
Owen McKee was a key player for the Gryphons OUA championship run, finishing the season with 5 goals. The Ottawa native scored 2 game winners during the 2021 season, his first in the regular season against Brock and the second coming in the OUA semifinal match to lift the Gryphons over Carleton 1-0. McKee also scored the first goal for the Gryphons in the OUA Championship final, en route to a Gryphons 3-2 win over the York Lions.
