GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Katrina Frlan (women's curling) and
Tyler Barry (men's wrestling) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering February 2 to 8, 2026.
Katrina Frlan (Women's Curling)
Katrina Frlan is this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' after she led her Gryphons women's curling team to their first OUA Curling Championship in 46 years. Frlan, a first-year skip, was named OUA's MVP and Rookie of the Year after leading her rink to their first provincial goal medal since 1980 with the Gryphon women finishing 1st at the 2026 OUA Curling Championships in Welland over the weekend (Feb. 6-8). The Gryphons topped their pool in pool play with a 3-1 record to advance to the knockout round as the No. 2-seed. In their quarterfinal matchup against the TMU Bold, the Gryphons put up a three spot in the 5th and 6th ends as they were able to avenge their pool play loss in their 8-5 win in 7 ends. In the OUA semifinals, Guelph would score twice in the extra end as they defeated the Queen's Gaels, 8-6, to advance to the gold medal match. Frlan and her rink in the gold medal match found themselves trailing the reigning OUA champion McMaster Marauders 4-2, but they came through with a big 7th end, scoring four times to retake the lead at 6-4, leading the Marauders to concede as the Gryphons would take home their first OUA championship in women's curling since 1980, and just the third conference banner in U of G women's curling history (1978, 1980, 2026). Outside of her collegiate competition, Frlan (Kanata, Ontario) is based out the Huntley Curling Club. The psychology major has attended U-18 and U-20 nationals and has qualified for U-20 Ontario Provincials again this season. Frlan is currently flying out to Switzerland to compete in the Swiss Cup before returning on Feb. 16 to lead the rest of her Gryphons curling team at the 2026 U SPORTS Curling Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan on Feb. 17-21.
Tyler Barry (Men's Wrestling)
Tyler Barry earns the honours for 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' following an outstanding performance in the 2026 OUA Wrestling Championships on Saturday (Feb. 7) in London where he took home a silver medal. Barry, a third-year wrestler from Milton, On, moved up a weight class from 68kg to 72kg this season and has performed well throughout the course of the varsity wrestling season. The arts major was flawless in the preliminary stage at the 2026 OUA Wrestling Championships, winning all four of his matches to qualify for the OUA gold medal match, where he was defeated by Western's Chayton Valleau in the finals as he finishes in 2nd place to earn an OUA silver medal in the 72kg weight class. Barry has booked his spot at nationals with the result, with the 2025-26 varsity wrestling season set to culminate in Thunder Bay at the 2026 Wrestling Canada Lutte U SPORTS Invitational Championships at the end of the month (Feb. 27-28).
