Track and Field – Men and Women No. 1
In the latest national rankings, the women's track and field team moves up one spot to join the men's team as the top ranked team in the country at No. 1. The Gryphons track and field program was in State College, PA over the weekend (Jan. 30-31) for the Penn State National Open which was highlighted by
Nicole McKenzie in the women's 600m. McKenzie, fifth-year sprinter broke the Canadian record in the women's 600m with a time of 1:26.95, breaking a record previously held by Aurora Rynda (All-American runner for the Michigan Wolverines) set in 2022. The history major also broke her own school record at the meet which she set a few weeks back in the Wolverine Invitational. McKenzie with her Canadian record breaking run also booked her spot at nationals by reaching the auto standard mark.
Rebecca Parker and
Paige Zinger also qualified for the U SPORTS Track and Field Championships in the pentathlon, Gabby Cole booked her spot in the women's 60m and both men's and women's 4x400m relay teams as well qualifying for nationals from Happy Valley.
Callista Blair (women's high jump) from the York Open in Toronto and
Max Davies (men's 1500) from the BU Terrier Classic in Boston, MA both booked their spot in Winnipeg for nationals. Next up for the Gryphon track and field team, a trip to Windsor for the Windsor Team Challenge this weekend (Feb. 6-7).
Women's Hockey – No. 5
The Gryphons women's hockey team climbed one spot to No. 5 in the latest U SPORTS rankings. The Gryphons played a pair of home games against the Waterloo Warriors (Jan. 28) and Toronto Varsity Blues (Jan. 31), coming through with a pair of regulation victories. On Wednesday night against the now No. 7-ranked Warriors, Guelph scored three times in the second period as they withstood a late Waterloo rally to hang on for the 4-3 win. The Gryphons were in a similar position on Saturday night against the Varsity Blues, scoring twice in the opening 1:55 of the third period to take a 3-2 lead as they were able to hold off a late Toronto push to win by that exact scoreline. The Gryphons remain in 2nd place in the OUA West Division with 51 points and a record of 17-2-3. The women's hockey team will play their final two regular season home games this weekend when they host the York Lions on Friday night (Feb. 6) and Brock Badgers on Saturday (Feb. 7).
