GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Nolan Dann (men's hockey) and
Katherine Heard (women's hockey) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering January 19 to 25, 2026.
Nolan Dann (Men's Hockey)
This week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' is
Nolan Dann, who helped lead his Gryphons men's hockey team
to a win in the 16th annual "Frosty Mug" game. Dann, a standout second-year forward, would give the Gryphons the lead for good as
he sniped home the go-ahead goal on the man advantage in the 2nd period to help his side pick up an important 3-1 win over the Brock Badgers at the Sleeman Centre on Thursday night (Jan. 22). The Gryphs returned to the Gryphon Centre ice on Saturday night (Jan. 24) when they hosted the Lakehead Thunderwolves and it didn't take long for the former Flint Firebird (OHL) to make his presence felt yet again. Just like his goal in the Frosty Mug, Dann would once again
pick his corner, glove side to score his 12th goal of the season. Guelph would fall in overtime to the Thunderwolves, 3-2, as they were able to earn a valuable point in a tight OUA West Division. The arts major from Cambridge, Ontario has now recorded a point in five straight games and has been one of the hottest players in all of U SPORTS this season. In seven games since the calendar flipped to January, Dann has tallied 12 points, and in the process has taken sole possession of the OUA scoring lead with 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists) in 20 games played. Dann and the men's hockey team will be on the road for a pair of games this week when they take on the Windsor Lancers on Friday night (Jan. 30) in Windsor, before heading to the University of Waterloo for a Saturday afternoon (Jan. 31) matchup with the Waterloo Warriors.
Katherine Heard (Women's Hockey)
Katherine Heard is this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' as she continues her torrid goal scoring streak in the second half of the season. Heard, a fifth-year sociology major and the team captain of the Gryphons women's hockey team, played a key role in her team's two road wins over the weekend. With the game still scoreless on Friday night (Jan. 23) in Toronto against the TMU Bold, it would be Heard coming through for the Gryphons as she took the pass from
Avery Robinson in overtime and
wired home the game's only goal to lead her side to a 1-0 OT win over TMU. A quick turnaround for the team saw them back on the ice on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 24) in Kingston against the Queen's Gaels, and it would be Heard who would once again make her imprint on the game. In the 2nd period, the fifth-year forward started the Gryphs on the rush as
she pounced on the rebound and scored to extend her goal scoring streak to four games to give her side a 2-0 lead. Heard added an assist to her name in the 3rd period when she set up
Maeve Sutherland-Case for the team's 4th goal of the contest in their 4-1 road win over the No. 8-ranked Queen's Gaels. Heard in the month of January has been on fire, scoring in four straight games and has six points in the month, vaulting her to 6th in the OUA with 18 points on the season. The standout forward from Arva, Ontario is also tied for 3rd in the conference with 12 assists. Heard and the rest of the No. 6-ranked Gryphons women's hockey team are back on home ice this week when they host the No. 8-ranked Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night (Jan. 28), followed by a Saturday night home game with the Toronto Varsity Blues (Jan. 31).
