GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2022-23 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our "BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" series. This week's "BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" recipients are
Braelyn Dennis (field hockey) and
Braedon Walsh (baseball) for the period ending September 18, 2022.
Braedon Walsh (Baseball)
Braedon Walsh, a 21-year old shortstop with the Gryphons baseball team, takes home Athlete of the Week honours after one of the most memorable weekend performances in program history.

Walsh, a psychology major from Barrie, Ontario, led the way for the Gryphons this past weekend in a pair of doubleheader sweeps over Western and Windsor. Over the course of the four games, Walsh was an incredible 11-of-13 at the plate with 3 doubles, 8 RBI and countless outstanding defensive plays at shortstop. In his final at-bat of the weekend, Walsh just narrowly missed a 3-run home run after hitting a towering drive that would sail just a few feet wide of the right field foul pole. Walsh and the Gryphons have put together a sensational start to the 2022 OUA baseball season, posting a 9-1 record in conference play. The Gryphon baseball team returns to the diamond on Saturday, September 24 with a road matchup versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees, before returning to Hastings Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 25) to host the Waterloo Warriors.
Braelyn Dennis (Field Hockey)
Biological science major,
Braelyn Dennis, takes home Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after helping lead the Gryphons to an impressive opening weekend of play in OUA field hockey. Dennis, a St. Thomas, Ontario native currently in her fourth year academically and third-year of eligibility, scored a hat trick on Sunday (Sept. 18) in Guelph's 5-2 win over the Western Mustangs. Dennis and the Gryphons also picked up an additional point in London back on Friday night (Sept. 16) when the Gryphons and Mustangs played to a 2-2 tie. Braelyn has emerged as a versatile option for head coach,
Michelle Turley, performing well both at forward as well as in the midfield.

The Gryphons (1-0-1) will return to action on this weekend, with a Friday night road trip to York University, followed by a Sunday morning (Sept. 25) home matchup versus McGill.
