GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2022-23 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our
Gryphon varsity programs as part of our "
BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" series. This week's "
BioSteel Gryphon Athletes of the Week" recipients are
Justin Allen (men's golf) and
Hannah Woodhouse (women's cross country) for the period ending September 25, 2022.
Justin Allen (Men's Golf)
After being named an OUA First Team All-Star a season ago, expectations were high for Gryphons men's golfer,
Justin Allen, heading into the 2022 season. And the 23-year-old Etobicoke native is living up to those high expectations through the first half of the 2022 OUA golf season. Allen takes home "Gryphon Athlete of the Week" honours after a pair of standout performances this past week.
On Monday, September 19, the marketing management major finished 1st in a field of 54 golfers at the 2022 McMaster Invitational. Allen claimed top spot in the field by firing a round of -3 under, 69 on Monday at Kings Forest Golf Club to finish 2 shots clear of the next closest competitors in the field (with McMaster's Patrick Maloney and Laurentian's Alex Fowke both shooting 71).
Justin Allen would then follow up his impressive round on Monday, with another outstanding round on Sunday (Sept. 25) at the Brock Invitational. Allen finished T2 in a field of 63 golfers at the 2022 Brock Invitational, thanks to a round of -1 under, 70 at Sawmill Golf Course. Allen was just 1 shot back of Laurier's Conor Gaudet, and shared T-2 honours with McMaster's Patrick Maloney. Through the first three events of the Gryphons 2022 golf schedule, Allen has now finished 2nd, 1st and T-2. This past June,
earned a 6th-place finish at nationals in Quebec (out of a field of 101 golfers from 18 different schools). Allen also finished 3rd in the men's individual standings at the 2021 OUA Golf Championships in Pickering, and has continued his strong play during his senior season as a Gryphon in 2022. The Gryphon golf teams are once again in action today (Monday, Sept. 26) at the Niagara College Invitational. The 2022 OUA golf season will culminate October 14-16 in Ottawa, with the 2022 OUA Golf Championships set to take place at Hylands Golf Club.
Hannah Woodhouse (Women's Cross Country)
Gryphons women's cross country standout,
Hannah Woodhouse, takes home "Gryphon Athlete of the Week" honours after a strong showing at the Gryphons 2022 season-opening event on Saturday, September 24 in London. Woodhouse, a 25-year-old native of Clarksburg, Ontario, led the way for the Gryphons, completing the 8km race in a time of 30:13.
In doing so, Hannah finished 5th overall amongst the 64 collegiate competitors who ran on Saturday, with the Gryphons women's cross country team claiming 1st in the final team standings after placing five runners within the top 12 (

Olivia Roussel – 12th). For Woodhouse, a PhD candidate at the University of Guelph studying population medicine, Saturday's performance marked the first official race in what has been a long journey back to collegiate competition as a Gryphon. After the 2020 season was cancelled due to the pandemic, Hannah was forced to sit out the 2021 season due to injury. Now, the Clarksburg native is healthy and once again showcasing the form that allowed her to achieve U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian status during her fourth-year back in 2019. Woodhouse will now prepare to test herself against some of the top women's cross country runners from south of the border, as she heads to Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the 2022 Paul Short Run on Friday, September 30.
