Kelyn Young (Women's Wrestling) Named U SPORTS Wrestling Athlete of the Week

TORONTO, Ont. – A member of the Guelph Gryphons varsity wrestling program has been recognized at the national level, as Gryphons women's wrestler, Kelyn Young, has been named U SPORTS Wrestling Athlete of the Week. Young was one of 10 student-athletes from across the country to be named U SPORTS Athlete of the Week, for the period covering Jan. 9 – 15, 2023.

Kelyn Young, a 20-year-old Brampton native, is currently in her third year of studies, but first season as a Gryphon after transferring from the University of Alberta to the University of Guelph. Kelyn Young - Gryphons women's wrestlingThis past weekend at the Brock Invitational, Kelyn Young was dominant in the women's 50kg weight class. Young pinned all four of her opponents from Western, York, Carleton, and Brock, including the 2021 U23 World Championship representative for Canada, on her way to earning a 1st-place finish.

Prior to her collegiate career, Young attended Mayfield Secondary School (Brampton, ON) and competed out of the Matmen Wrestling Club, where she was a three-time Ontario high school medalist. In addition to her success at the high school level, Kelyn has also earned the title of 2018 Cadet National Champion as well as a three-time Ontario Provincial Champion. Young has represented Team Ontario at the 2017 Canada Summer Games, and has also reached the podium at the 2018 Pan American Championships, where she took home a bronze.
