Gryphon Men Finish 4th in Final Team Standings; U of G Women Finish 6th

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons varsity wrestling program impressed over the course of two days at a national championship event in St. Catharines, Ontario, with Brock University serving as hosts of the 2025 Wrestling Canada Lutte U SPORTS Invitational Championships (Feb. 28 – March 1, 2025).

The Gryphons had two student-athletes earn the title of individual national champion, with both Kelyn Young (women's 50kg) and Casey Harkley (men's 68kg) topping the podium in their respective weight classes. Casey Harkley - gold medalist at 2025 nationalsFor Kelyn Young, a psychology major at the University of Guelph from Brampton, Ontario, it marks her third consecutive year representing Guelph on the national podium, after having earned bronze each of the past two seasons. For Casey Harkley, a first-year management economics and finance major at U of G, it caps off a standout rookie season with the Gryphons men's wrestling team, with the Guelph native also having earned an OUA bronze medal back on February 9 at the OUA Wrestling Championships. It marks the first time since 2019 in which the Gryphons wrestling program has had multiple student-athletes take home gold at the national level. Both Kelyn Young and Casey Harkley were named major award winners at the conclusion of the national championship event, with Young taking home the R.W. Pugh Fair Play Award, while Harkley earned national Rookie of the Year honours.

In total, the Gryphons made five trips to the podium on Saturday, with Brennan Laplante Brady earning silver in the men's 72kg, while Kylee Lubbers (women's 68kg) and Mitchel Schechinger (men's 125kg) earned national bronze medals. The Gryphons had 14 student-athletes competing at nationals, with the U of G men finishing 4th in the final team standings, while the Gryphon women finished 6th in the final team standings. The Brock Badgers took the national title on the women's side, while the University of Alberta Golden Bears took home the men's team title.
