GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2024-25 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by Core Power' series.
Kelyn Young (women's wrestling) and
Brennan Laplante Brady (men's wrestling) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering February 3 to 9, 2025.
Kelyn Young – Women's Wrestling
For the second time this season, Gryphon wrestler
Kelyn Young has been named our Gryphon 'Athlete of the Week'. Young, a psychology major at the University of Guelph with a minor in neuroscience, is in her final year of her undergraduate studies and third season competing with the Gryphons women's wrestling program. With three wins under her belt in the women's 50kg weight class this season, Young continued her outstanding season, claiming gold at the OUA Wrestling Championships on Saturday (Feb. 8). The Brampton, Ontario native cruised through pool play winning all three of her matches with two via fall to qualify for the gold medal match where she defeated Brock's Samantha Romero via technical fall to win her second career OUA gold medal in the women's 50kg weight class. Young was named "OUA Female Wrestler of the Year" following her fantastic showing in Sault Ste. Marie becoming just the third Gryphon woman ever to be named OUA Wrestler of the Year (joining
Natassya Lu in 2016-17, and Tara Hedican who earned the honour twice in 2001-02 & 2002-03). Young is a great team leader who leads by example and is one of the mentors for younger athletes on the team. Young and the nine other Gryphon podium finishers will next compete at the 2025 U SPORTS Wrestling Championships (Feb. 28-March 1) in St. Catharines, Ontario at the campus of Brock University.
Brennan Laplante Brady – Men's Wrestling
We head back to the mat for this week's 'Athlete of the Week' as
Brennan Laplante Brady earns this week's honours following his gold medal performance in the OUA Wrestling Championships in the men's 72kg weight class on Saturday (Feb. 8). Laplante Brady, an English major at the U of G in his final season on Gryphons wrestling team, won all three his matches in his pool to qualify for the gold medal match in the men's 72kg weight class where he defeated Brock's Hamazah Al-Qayse in the final via technical fall. For the Kingston native, the gold medal marked an improvement from last year's result, after earning silver at last year's OUA Championships. Laplante Brady is one of the team leaders with the Gryphons wrestling program and put together one of the best tournaments of his Gryphon career in Sault Ste. Marie. Laplante Brady will be joining his teammate
Kelyn Young and the seven other Gryphon wrestlers who medaled at the OUA's at the 2025 U SPORTS Wrestling Championship (Feb. 28-March 1) at Brock.
