WRESTLING RECAP: Gryphons Make Nine Trips to Podium at 2025 OUA Wrestling Championships

Gryphons Finish 4th in Final Team Standings on Both Men's & Women's Sides

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – On Saturday, February 8, a total of 22 student-athletes from the Guelph Gryphons varsity wrestling program represented the University of Guelph at the 2025 OUA Wrestling Championships in Sault Ste. Marie, with Algoma University serving as host of the conference championships for a second consecutive season. Kelyn Young gold medalist at 2025 OUA Wrestling ChampionshipsThe Gryphons made nine trips to the OUA podium (2 gold, 1 silver, 6 bronze) while finishing in 4th-place in the final team standings on both the men's and women's sides, respectively. The nine medals is the most trips to the OUA podium for Guelph since the 2019-20 season when they also reached the podium on nine occasions.

Kelyn Young, a 21-year-old from Brampton, Ontario, added the second OUA gold medal of her standout Gryphon wrestling career. Young, a psychology major at the University of Guelph with a minor in neuroscience, is in her final year of her undergraduate studies and third season competing with the Gryphons women's wrestling program. Young claimed OUA gold in the women's 50kg weight class, defeating Brock University's Samantha Romero in the final to earn top spot on the podium. Young was also named an OUA major award winner at the conclusion of the conference championships, as she took home the honour of "OUA Female Wrestler of the Year." Young becomes just the third Gryphon woman ever to be named OUA Wrestler of the Year (joining Natassya Lu in 2016-17, and Tara Hedican who earned the honour twice in 2001-02 & 2002-03). Brennan Laplante Brady - OUA gold medalist at 2025 OUA Wrestling ChampionshipsYoung will look to carry the momentum from a strong OUA showing into nationals later this month in February, with the Brampton native having claimed U SPORTS bronze medals at each of the past two nationals.

The other OUA gold medal for the Gryphons on Saturday came from Brennan Laplante Brady in the men's 72kg weight class. The 21-year-old from Kingston, Ontario topped the OUA podium, defeating Brock's Hamazah Al-Qayse in the final. For Laplante Brady, an English major at the University of Guelph, it marks a one-place improvement on the OUA podium after having earned OUA silver a season ago.

The Brock Badgers were crowned OUA champions on the men's and women's sides. Full details below. The nine Gryphon wrestlers who reached the OUA podium have earned the opportunity to compete at nationals (Feb. 28-March 1), with Brock University set to serve as the hosts of the 2025 U SPORTS Wrestling Championships.
