FENCING RECAP: Gryphons Finish 8th at 2026 OUA Men's Fencing Championships

WATERLOO, Ont. – The University of Guelph men's fencing team competed in the 2026 OUA Men's Fencing Championships, hosted by the Waterloo Warriors over the weekend (Mar. 7-8). The Gryphons finished in 8th place in the two-day championship tournament.

The Gryphons had four fencers advance onto the knockout round in the foil and epee individual event on Saturday. Guelph had three fencers in the epee individual event qualify for the knockout round. Matei Dan Dobre had a 10th-place finish in the event, winning four of his six matches in the second round to qualify for the knockout round as the 10-seed where he won his round of 32 match before falling to Queen's Theo Pos is in the final 16. Benjamin Roe also reached the final 16 in 12th-place, winning four matches in round 2 to qualify for the single-elimination bracket as the 15-seed. Roe won his round of 32 match before he was defeated by the 2-seed Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia of Toronto. Campbell Merer also qualified for the knockout round by winning four matches in round 2 to qualify as the 13-seed but he was eliminated in the round of 32 to finish in 19th-place. In the men's foil event, Daniel Lau won four matches in round 2 to qualify for the knockout round as the 15-seed but fell in the round of 32 to Toronto's Aimon Heese. In Sunday's team event, the Gryphons epee team was the lone team to qualify for the single-elimination knockout as they finished in 6th-place after falling to McMaster in the 5th-place match.
 
The Toronto Varsity Blues would win their 10th consecutive OUA Men's Fencing Championship at the conclusion of the two-day championship tournament.
