TORONTO, Ont. - This past weekend the University of Guelph Gryphons women's varsity fencing team traveled down Highway 401 to Toronto to compete in the 2024 OUA Women's Fencing Championships, hosted by the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Following the two-day provincial tournament the Gryphons finished 13th in the team standings, tying their result from last seasons championships.

The Gryphon women's performance was highlighted by a strong showing from Isabelle Pense in the women's sabre individual event. The rookie political science major from Laguna Beach, California, posted a 3-3 record through pool play with 17 touches scored against 22 touches received to enter the knockout stage as the 20th seed. In the round of 32, Pense pulled off the upset defeating Toronto's Caroline Placko 15-9 to advance to the round of 16 where she would see her day come to an end after suffering a 15-3 loss to the 4-seeded Tatiana Gayowsky from Queen's. 

At the conclusion of the two-day championship tournament, the Western Mustangs captured their first OUA women's fencing championship since 2017 with a dominant performance which saw the team earn 411 points.
