FENCING RECAP: Gryphons Finish 10th at 2026 OUA Women's Fencing Championships

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The University of Guelph women's fencing team made the trip to Peterborough to compete in the 2026 OUA Women's Fencing Championships, hosted by the Trent Excalibur over the weekend (Jan. 24-25). The Gryphons finished the two-day championship tournament in 10th-place.
 
The Gryphons saw two fencers advance to the knockout round in the foil and sabre individual event on Saturday. Alexandra Bis competed in the women's foil event as she won three of her six matches to qualify for the knockout round. Bis would advance as the No. 22 seed but would be eliminated in the round of 32 to Ottawa's Jaimie Lina Park 15-4 to finish in 22nd place. Hanieh Dehghan Niri represented the Gryphons in the women's sabre event as she won two of her six matches in pool play to qualify for the knockout round. Niri entered the round of 32 as the No. 23-seed but would see her day end as she was defeated by No. 10-seed Katelyn Jordan from McMaster 15-4 to finish the event in 23rd place. In Sunday's team event, the Gryphons advanced as the No. 7-seed in the foil and saber event as they bowed out in the quarterfinal stage. Guelph would finish in 7th place in the team saber, defeated Brock in the 7th place match while in the team foil event, the Gryphs finished in 8th place following their defeat to Carleton in the 7th place match.
 
At the conclusion of the two-day provincial tournament, the Toronto Varsity Blues would claim their second consecutive OUA women's fencing championship with a final score of 385.
