Donavin Milloy (offence),
Anakin Guthrie (defence) and
Jackson Leshuk (special teams) have been named Gryphon Football 'Players of the Game' following the team's Week 3 31-17 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday, September 6.
Donavin Milloy (Offence)
Donavin Milloy dazzled in his return to the Gryphon offence and has been named the team's 'Offensive Player of the Game'. Milloy, a fourth-year running back from Hamilton, missed the first two games of the season due to injury but returned to the lineup on Saturday night and was exceptional. The arts major finished the game with 16 carries for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns including a 4-yard touchdown run to get his team on the board in the 2nd quarter. His biggest run of the game would prove to the game's biggest play of the night. With 8:06 left in the 4th quarter and the game tied at 17-17, Milloy would take the handoff from his own 42-yard line and hit the seam with a full head of steam as he ran away from the Lancers and into the end zone for a 68-yard touchdown run that gave the Gryphons their first lead of the game.
Anakin Guthrie (Defence)
Anakin Guthrie made a pair of game-breaking plays to help lead his team to a win over Windsor as he earns the honours of being this week's 'Defensive Player of the Game.'
Guthrie was part of a Guelph defence that limited the Lancers to 10 total points in the game and 3 points in the final three quarters. The Guelph native finished the game with one solo tackle but came through with two interceptions. The first interception for Guthrie came at a critical point of the game. With the Lancers leading 14-7 late in the 2nd quarter and driving at the Gryphon 5-yard line, the sociology major would pick off the Nick Dimovski pass in the end zone and return it back 110 yards the other way but a block in the back penalty negated the touchdown but the pick kept the Lancers from making it a two possession game before the half. Guthrie later in the game would clinch the team's 31-17 victory with his game-sealing interception for his 2nd pick of the night.
Jackson Leshuk (Special Teams)
For the second time this season,
a first-year player has been named 'Special Teams Player of the Game' as
Jackson Leshuk has earned this week's honour. Leshuk, the local product from Centennial C.V.I., was great for the team in all four core special teams units. The psychology major made his mark on the team's coverage unit where he made 3 solo tackles and assisted in two.
The Gryphons (1-2) following the win, return home to U of G's Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 13) where they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees (2-1) in Week 4. The Gryphons and Gee-Gees game can be seen live online at www.oua.tv with tickets for the game available at gryphons.ca/tickets.
