LONDON, Ont. – In a high-scoring matchup under the lights on Sunday night (Aug. 31) in London at Western University's Alumni Stadium, the No. 7-ranked Guelph Gryphons were on the wrong end of a 53-33 score line against the high-powered and No. 4-nationally ranked Western Mustangs. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 0-2 on the season, with both losses coming against top-ranked opponents in the No. 2-nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks (Week 1) and the No. 4-nationally ranked Western Mustangs.
A slow start on Sunday night at Western would prove to be too much to overcome for the Gryphons, with the Mustangs jumping out to a commanding 31-10 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. After the Mustangs extended their lead to 38-10 early in the 3rd quarter, the Gryphons would show tremendous resolve to fight their way back into the game. Gryphons quarterback,
Tristan Aboud (16-23, 231 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT), was forced to leave the game late in the opening half, but fellow third-year pivot,
Marshall McCray, would provide a spark for the Gryphons in the second half. McCray finished the night as the game's leading rusher, getting it done with his feet with 16 carries for 130 yards and two rushing touchdowns, while also throwing for 79 yards. After McCray led the Gryphons on a pair of touchdown drives in the 3rd quarter, the deficit was suddenly down to a two-score game with Western leading 38-24. But every time the Gryphons made a push, the Western offence would respond. Less than a minute after the Gryphons made it a 38-24 game, the Mustangs would answer back with a touchdown of their own, with Ethan Dolby's 84-yard touchdown run pushing the Western lead to 45-24. The two teams combined for over 1,110 yards of offence on the night (Guelph 600, Western 538) in a shoot out between a pair of U SPORTS Top 10-ranked opponents.
The Gryphons (0-2) will once again hit the road for yet another away game under the lights, this time, at the University of Windsor on Saturday night (Sept. 6) with kickoff set for 7pm against the Lancers (0-1). The Windsor Lancers (0-1) had an opening week bye week in Week 1, and suffered a 30-9 defeat at the hands of Laurier on Saturday, Aug. 30 in Waterloo.
