SWIM RECAP: Gryphon Women Finish 5th, Men 6th at 2024 OUA Swimming Championships

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - After three days of competition at the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre at Brock University, the Guelph Gryphons officially wrapped up competition at the 2024 OUA Swimming Championships Sunday night. The Gryphons finished the weekend championships in 5th-place on the women's side and 6th on the men's in the final team standings. For a ninth consecutive season, the U of T Varsity Blues swept the OUA team titles on both the men's and women's side. 
 

FULL RESULTS
 

The Gryphons' time in St. Catharines was highlighted by a pair of student-athletes joining six of the their U of G teammates who qualified for the U SPORTS Championships next month. Fourth-year marketing major Ethan Rotsaert-Smith qualified for nationals following an 8th-place finish in the men's 100m breastsroke, which saw the Dundas product cross the finish line with a time of 1:02.75. Rotsaert-Smtih was one of the Gryphons busiest athletes over the course of the three-day event, swimming in a total of 10 events between preliminaries, finals, and relay races. Ethan Rotsaert-Smith @ 2024 OUA ChampionshipsHe also earned personal bests in the 200m breastroke and 200m individual medley. Also impressing on the men's side was Andrei Ciorogariu, who posted personal bests in the men's 400m (4:08.41) and 1500m (16:54.04) events. Thomas Steele, a local product of Guelph and freshman, went 4-for-4 posting personal bests in the 400m individual medley (4:30.89), 200m butterfly (2:07.00), 200m backstroke (2:04.47), and 200m individual medley (2:08.68). The best result of the weekend for the U of G men came in the men's 4x50m medley relay, which saw the Gryphon team of Nicolas Pereira, Ethan Rotsaert-Smith, Jacob Stojanovic, and Adam Zielinski finish just off the podium in 4th-place. 

On the women's side Alanna Casasanta became the sixth U of G student-athlete to qualify for nationals, joining Lauren Anthony, Ali Bertrim, Liz Greaves, Ashley Hodge, and Hannah Nordquist. The rookie accounting major from Brantford posted a time of 2:17.28 in the women's 200m backstroke to punch her ticket to U SPORTS. In her final outing as a Gryphon swimmer, senior Leah Polito also impressed, swimming a personal best time of 5:07.43 in the women's 400m individual medley to earn an 8th-place finish. The human kinetics major from London, Ontario also showed improved times between the preliminary and final races of the women's 200m backstroke to earn the top spot in her heat. The Gryphons best result of the three-day event came thanks to a combined effort from Alanna Casasanta, Sunbin Kim, Alexandra Bertrim, and Liz Greaves in the women's 4x100m medley relay, where the quartet finished just over a second behind the 3rd-place McMaster relay team. 

Over the course of the three-day competition, the Gryphons produced a total of 24 different top 8 finishes:

With the OUA Swimming Championships now complete, the Gryphons will turn their attention to nationals, where a total of eight Gryphons swimmers (6 women, 2 men) will head to Montreal, Quebec in three weeks to compete in the 2024 U SPORTS Swimming Championships (March. 7-9).
