T&F RECAP: Day 3 – 2022 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships

Gryphons sweep national titles for fourth straight season

SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick – For a fourth straight season, the Guelph Gryphons have swept both the men's and women's team titles at the U SPORTS Track and Field Championships. On Saturday, April 2 in Saint John, New Brunswick, the Gryphons capped off an impressive three-day stretch, culminating with the 8th national title in men's program history, and 6th national title in women's program history. On the women's side, it was a dominating performance by the Gryphons, who finished 47.5 points ahead of the next closest school (Guelph – 123.5 points, 2nd-place Saskatchewan – 76 points). On the men's side, it was a fight to the finish in the men's standings, with Guelph (97 points) ultimately edging the University of Toronto (86 points) for national bragging rights.

The third and final day of competition in Saint John saw the Gryphons reach the podium seven more times, highlighted by four gold medal performances. Gryphon standouts Sadie-Jane Hickson and Mark Bujnowski, who were named "Athlete of the Meet" on the women's and men's side, respectively, capped off memorable weeks with gold medals on Saturday. Hickson, who claimed gold in the women's 1,000m on Friday, returned to the top of the podium again on Saturday after claiming gold in the women's 600m. While Bujnowski, who was named the U SPORTS (Field) Athlete of the Year on Friday, would cap off his senior season by winning gold in the men's shot put for a third straight season at the national level. Saturday also saw the Gryphons dominate in the relays. In the women's 4x200m relay, the Gryphons set a new U SPORTS record time, with Zoe Sherar, Morgan Byng, Jacqueline Madogo and Voneta Davis posting a time of 1:36.20. The Gryphons also claimed U SPORTS golds in the women's 4x400m relay, while the U of G men claimed silver in the 4x400m relay. Over the course of the three-day national championship event, the Gryphons finished with a total of 17 trips to the U SPORTS podium (9 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze).
