GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Gabrielle Cole (women's track and field) and
Keon Rude (men's track and field) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering March 2 to 8, 2026.
Gabby Cole (Women's Track and Field)
Gabby Cole had herself a phenomenal meet at nationals as she takes home this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' honours. Cole, a fourth-year sprinter on the Gryphons women's track and field team, medaled in all four events she competed in at the 2026 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships in Winnipeg. The culture and technology major at the University of Guelph kicked off her meet on Thursday (Mar. 5) putting up a blazing time of 7.20s in the women's 60m to claim U SPORTS gold. The time was a personal best and broke her own school record. The 7.20 time also matched the qualifying standard for the upcoming World Athletics Indoor Championships. Cole was just one-hundredth of a second short of the U23 and U SPORTS record of 7.19, set by Canadian Olympian Khamica Bingham back in 2015. The following day (Mar. 6) in the women's 300m, Cole ran a time of 37.73 to win the silver medal as she finished behind her teammate
Dianna Proctor as the Gryphons went 1-2 in the finals. The Ajax, Ontario native wrapped up her meet with a pair of relay medals, winning gold in the women's 4x400m relay alongside her teammates
Dianna Proctor,
Amira Lawrence and
Erika Lealess, and silver in the women's 4x200m relay alongside Proctor, Lawrence and
Nicole McKenzie, despite posting a time of 1:35.37 which broke the previous U SPORTS record as they were edged by the Saskatchewan Huskies Women's 4x200m relay team who set the new mark. Cole and the women's track and field team finished with 105 points to claim their ninth national championship in program history.
Keon Rude (Men's Track and Field)
Keon Rude is this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' after posting a record-setting run in the men's 60m hurdles. Rude, a second-year sprinter and hurdler, earned a pair of medals in Winnipeg at the 2026 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships. The geography major kicked off his meet with a podium finish in the men's 60m on Thursday (Mar. 5) with a bronze medal placing, clocking in with a time of 6.74s as he narrowly edged out two other competitors for the final spot on the podium. The highlight of Rude's meet would come the following day (Friday, Mar. 6) in the men's 60m hurdles. The Calgary native crossed the finish line with a time of 7.75s to not only claim U SPORTS gold but set a new U SPORTS meet record in the process to take home his second medal at the meet and first gold medal at nationals. His time bested that of former Gryphon (and 2024 Olympian), Craig Thorne, who held the prior record of 7.77 seconds set in 2023. Rude and the men's track and field team finished in 3rd-place in the final team standings to earn the team bronze.
