T&F RECAP: Day 2 – 2022 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships

Gryphons reach podium nine times on Day 2

SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick – With Day 2 of 3 now complete from the 2022 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships in Saint John, New Brunswick, the Guelph Gryphons have once again put themselves in position to claim national titles on both the women's and men's sides.
 
A strong Day 2 saw the Gryphons make a total of nine trips to the podium (4 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze). On the women's side, the Gryphons have built up an impressive 41 point lead over 2nd-place Laval. Mark BujnowskiOn the men's side, the Gryphons trail the University of Toronto by just 3 points heading into Saturday's final day of competition.
 
Friday's Day 2 action started off on a high note, with Mark Bujnowski successfully defending his national title in the men's weight throw. winning the 2022 gold in the event with an outstanding throw of 20.48m (well ahead of the next closest competitor - with Andreas Troschke from Lethbridge taking silver with a throw of 18.68m). Bujnowski will look to complete the U SPORTS double-gold on Saturday, with the men's shot put scheduled for Saturday, April 2 at 1:45pm.
 
On the women's side, the Gryphon performances on Friday were highlighted by veteran standouts Zoe Sherar and Sadie-Jane Hickson. Sadie-Jane Hickson - U SPORTS gold - womens 1,000mSherar, a fifth-year student-athlete majoring in tourism and hospitality, claimed U SPORTS gold in the women's 300m for a second consecutive season, while Sadie-Jane Hickson, a fifth-year bio-medical science major, took gold in the women's 1,000m after having claimed U SPORTS silver in the same event two years ago. The Gryphons also claimed U SPORTS gold in the men's 4x800m relay on Friday, with Alanzo Ryan, Andrew LeBlanc, Adam Schmidt and Alec Purnell teaming up to take the lone relay event of Friday's schedule.
 
Saturday's schedule will see 13 events take place, beginning at 11:30am ET and running through until 3:30pm ET. The Gryphons will be hoping to leave Saint John, New Brunswick with a sweep of the men's and women's team titles for a fourth straight season.
