Van Moerkerke heading to Olympics


On Friday night at the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials in Toronto, Ont., Guelph Gryphons swimmer Evan Van Moerkerke earned a spot in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with his performance.
 
The CIS All-Canadian earned a spot on the 100m Freestyle relay team after finishing fourth with a time of 49.75 in the race. He swam a best time in the Finals, running down the other swimmers on the final 50meters of the race and with his amazing touch earned himself a spot ont he Olympic team. 
 
Santo Condorelli won the race with a time of 48.16 seconds. He elevated Canada as a whole by forcing those chasing him in the water on Friday to greater speeds. Yuri Kisil was second (48.58), Markus Thormeyer third (49.38) and Moerkerke fourth to round out the men's 4x100m-free relay team in Rio.

Van Moerkerke also qualified himself to the 2016 World Short course championshps taking place this December in Deroit/Windsor.
