GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2026-27 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Joshua Henry (men's rugby) and
Sophie Pomeroy (field hockey) have been named 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' for the period covering of October 5 to 11, 2026.
Josh Henry (Men's Rugby)
Josh Henry continued his fantastic season for the Gryphons men's rugby team and has been named this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week.' Henry, a fifth-year marketing management major from Uxbridge, had 7 successful conversions in his team's 71-19 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night (Oct. 9). Henry is the current OUA leader in points (71) and tries (9) on the season. The Gryphons (5-0) wrap up their 2026 regular season schedule on Sunday (Oct. 18) when they head to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders, with a win over McMaster clinching the top overall seed in the OUA for the Gryphons and securing homefield advantage in the OUA playoffs. The Gryphons have won a program-record five straight OUA titles.
Sophie Pomeroy (Field Hockey)
Sophie Pomeroy continues to set the standard and excellence for the Gryphons field hockey team as this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week.' Pomeroy, a fourth-year forward from Halifax and team captain, has been one of the top goal scorers in the OUA this season as she continued her impressive play, setting up a key goal in the draw against Western (Oct. 9) and scoring a late goal to secure the win against Queen's (Oct. 10), helping the Gryphons pick up four points this weekend. Pomeroy made an explosive 15-metre run as she made a key assist, finding Madi Martin who scored in the 2-2 draw with the Mustangs on Friday (Oct. 9). Pomeroy on Saturday (Oct. 10) would secure the victory for her side, collecting the ball at the 25-yard line and beating three Gaels defenders en route to the goal, scoring into the open net for her 9th goal of the season. The bio-medical science major is the current OUA leader in goals (9) to go along with her 7 assists. Pomeroy and the rest of the Gryphons field hockey team (5-3-2) will close out their regular season this weekend when they host the Warriors on Saturday (Oct. 17) before heading to Toronto for the regular season finale against the Varsity Blues on Sunday (Oct. 18).
