GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Jacqueline Giles (women's golf) and
Landon Hutar (baseball) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering September 8 to 14, 2025.
Jacqueline Giles (Women's Golf)
Jacqueline Giles notches another victory in her illustrious Gryphon golf career as she earns this week's 'Athlete of the Week' honours. Giles, the fifth-year golfer and four-time OUA All-Star got her 2025 season off with a bang at the 'Fall Kickoff' from Guelph Lakes Golf & C.C on Friday (Sept. 12). The Georgetown, Ontario native shot a 74 in her first event of the season, earning her spot in a playoff where she defeated Western's Kira Turner in the playoff to finish 1st in the individual scoring race. The molecular biology and genetics major, back in her rookie year in 2021 with the team, became
the first Gryphons women's golfer to be crowned individual scoring champion at an OUA Golf Championship. Last season, Giles helped the U of G women's golf team
earn their best-ever finish at an OUA Golf Championship, with Guelph finishing 2nd in the overall team standings to claim silver at last year's OUA's. Giles and her Gryphons women's golf teammates are in London for Monday's (Sept. 15) Western Invitational before heading off to Fenwick, Ontario to compete in the Brock Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 21) at Sawmill Golf Course.
Landon Hutar (Baseball)
Landon Hutar is this week's 'Athlete of the Week' following an impressive showing on the mound for the Gryphons baseball team over the weekend. Hutar, the fourth-year management economics and finance major pitched over the weekend where he finished with a stat line of 5 innings pitched, allowing 3 hits, a walk, striking out 2 and earning a save. The Midland, Ontario native played a role in his team's 3-1 record over the weekend as his Gryphons earned a split against the Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Sept. 13) and a doubleheader sweep over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday (Sept. 14). Hutar and the Guelph baseball team are off to a strong start to the season, with a 7-1 record through the first 8 OUA games of the season, good for top spot in the regular season conference standings. The Gryphon baseball team is back in action for four games this week starting with non-conference action in Waterloo against the Warriors on Tuesday (Sept. 16) and back at home on Thursday (Sept. 18) against Lambton College before returning to OUA play on Saturday (Sept. 20) when they host the Waterloo Warriors in a doubleheader at Hastings Stadium.
