WINDSOR, Ont. - After two days of competition at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse in Windsor, Ontario the Guelph Gryphons officially wrapped up the 2024 OUA Track and Field Championships Saturday afternoon. For the first time in six years the Gryphons did not finish atop the team standings, instead claiming silver in both the men's and women's competitions after a fierce battle with the Western Mustangs throughout the tournament. The U of G women's track & field team finished just 10 points back of the championships winning Mustangs while the Gryphon men ended the two-day event 19.5 points behind Western, who claimed both OUA titles.
FULL RESULTS
Over the course of the two-day championship competition, the Gryphons were represented on the OUA podium 29 times, claiming 14 gold, 10 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
Day 1 was highlighted by a pair of record-setting performances from endurance runner
Max Davies and pole vaulter
Jennifer Elizarov. Davies, a third-year runner from Toronto, set a new OUA record in the men's 1000m with a time of 2:20.22, over three seconds faster than the 2nd-placed student-athlete. It was also not his only record of the weekend as he would go on to set a new conference record in the men's 1500m with a time of 3:44.24, breaking the previous record of 3:44.60 set by Bob McCormack in 1978. For Pole vaulter
Jennifer Elizarov is was a dominant performance from the third-year biomedical engineering major, as she jumped 4.22m to claim an OUA record and OUA gold by 0.22m.
Also highlighting the first day of competition for the Gryphon women was back-to-back 1-2 finishes in the women's 1000m and 60m hurdles.
Julia Agostinelli, the 2023 OUA cross county individual champion, and
Cameron Ormond crossed the finish line 1st and 2nd in the women's 1000m while
Hailey Reid and
Adenike Abiodun earned the top two spots in the women's 60m hurdles.
Pentathlon athlete
Rebecca Parker improved upon her 2023 OUA Track & field championship result to claim the 2024 title by a margin of 129 points, solidified after a sensational 1st-place performance in the 800m race to close out the competition.
Long jumper
Milenne Habash also had an impressive performance, earning OUA gold on the final jump of the event with a leap of 5.99m to vault her from 3rd-place to the top spot.
In the relay events the U of G women claimed gold in both the 4x200m and 4x400m events while the men earned top spot in the men's 4x800m race.
The Gryphon men's performance at this year's championships was also highlighted by a fantastic showing from
Nicholas Bannon in the men's 3000m, who earned the OUA title thanks to a time of 8:19.03, 3 seconds faster than the field.
