T&F RECAP: Day 1 - 2023 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan. - It was a member of the Guelph Gryphons women's track and field team who stole the spotlight on Day 1 of the 2023 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Jacqueline Madogo, a psychology major at the University of Guelph currently in her fifth year of studies and fourth year of eligibility, successfully defended her title in the women's 60m dash to become a two-time U SPORTS gold medalist in the women's 60m dash. The 22-year-old Ottawa native crossed the line in a blistering time of 7.29 seconds to finish ahead of Toronto's Onome Gbinije in the women's 60m final. Madogo's time also matched the University of Guelph school record in the women's 60m, with Jacqueline's former teammate, Shyvonne Roxborough being the previous owner.Women's 60m Podium - 2023 U SPORTS Champs.

For Madogo, who also played one season of women's soccer with the Gryphons during her freshman year in 2018-19, the gold medal on Thursday marked her third trip to the national podium, after having earned a U SPORTS silver medal in Edmonton during the 2019-20 season in addition to her gold at last year's championships. Jacqueline Madogo becomes just the second Gryphon sprinter ever to claim a pair of national gold medals in the women's 60m, joining Shyvonne Roxborough earned U SPORTS gold in the event in 2017 and 2019.

Another Gryphon highlight on Day 1 at nationals was the performance from Emily Fawcett in the women's weight throw. The Kingston native finished second in the women's weight throw with a toss of 17.67m, finishing 1.08m behind Lethbridge's Jinaye Shomachuk.
