MBB: Dezayne Mingo Becomes the First Ever Gryphon to be Named to U SPORTS All-Rookie Team

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia. - For the first time in program history, a Guelph Gryphons men's basketball player has garnered U SPORTS All-Rookie honours. Dezayne Mingo, a rookie guard from Hamilton, Ontario, was named to the 2023 U SPORTS All-Rookie Team on Thursday night (March 9) in Halifax at the U SPORTS Men's Basketball awards banquet.

The top 5 freshmen from across the country were named to the 2023 U SPORTS All-Rookie Team, with first-year standout Dezayne Mingo earning a spot among the country's best newcomers. Mingo, who just a few days ago became just the sixth Gryphon in program history to be named OUA Rookie of the Year, earned a spot in the starting lineup after just three games as a true freshman. The arts major quickly became a cornerstone to the Gryphons offense, leading the team in in points (282), assists (84) and minutes (588). The 6-foot-4 guard also helped lead the Gryphons back to the OUA playoffs after missing out on the postseason last year. With an 11-11 record the Gryphons earned the OUA's 11th seed and took on the 6-seeded Lakehead Thunderwolves in the opening round. Mingo scored 21 points for the Gryphons while also adding 11 rebounds and 5 assist to lead the Gryphons in their opening round upset and first playoff win since the 2011-12 season. During the regular season the rookie appeared in all 22 games for the Gryphons, with his best performance coming in a 107-89 victory over the Nipissing Lakers where Mingo recorded the first triple-double by a Gryphon in over 15 years with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
