GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons men's basketball team responded in a big way on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 8) as they defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds to split their weekend home games following their defeat to the No. 5-ranked TMU Bold on Friday night (Feb. 8). The split at home sees the Gryphons record improve to 11-10 on the season as they have qualified for the OUA playoffs for the second consecutive season.
Friday, Feb. 6, 2026 | Gryphons Battled but Fall to No. 5-ranked TMU
The Gryphons played host the No. 5-ranked TMU Bold on Friday night as they battled in the second half but the first half deficit was too much to overcome in their 79-67 defeat. The Guelph got the deficit down to as low as 6 points but Aaron Rhooms paced the Bold in their 12-point win, playing a game-high 39 minutes and finished with 20 points on the night. Eric Amrstrong led all scorers with 21 points while
Jack Tunstill filled up the box score with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals.
Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026 | Fast Start Leads Playoff Bound Gryphons to 99-47 Win over Algoma
On Sunday afternoon, the Gryphons rebounded and got back into the win column as they went wire-to-wire in their 99-47 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds for their 11th win of the season. A fast start was all the Gryphons needed, scoring the game's first 9 points, outscoring the Thunderbirds 31-7 in the opening quarter as they forced the visitors to 6 turnovers and held them to 2-11 shooting from the field. The Gryphs had one of their best defensive performance of the season in the win, holding Algoma to 47 points in the game, forcing 19 turnovers with 11 steals. Balanced scoring for the Gryphons helped them in the victory this afternoon with six Gryphs scoring in double-digits led by
Amare Hamilton's 15 points, making 5 three-pointers.
Isaiah Odle-Clarke,
Adrian Morra and
Eric Armstrong each pitched in with 12 points each while
Jack Tunstill finished the game with an 11 point, 10 rebound double-double.
The Gryphons will head to the road for their final regular season game when they take on the York Lions on Friday night (Feb. 13) from Toronto with plenty of seeding implications on the line in the final weekend of the OUA regular season.
