SASKATOON, Sask. - For a fifth straight season, the Guelph Gryphons have swept both the men's and women's team titles at the U SPORTS Track & Field Championships. On Saturday, March 11 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the Gryphons capped off an incredible three-day stretch, culminating with the 9th national title in men's program history, and 7th national title in women's program history. On both the men's and women's sides, the Gryphons put on dominating performances, finishing 100 points ahead of the next closest school on the women's side (Guelph - 166 points, 2nd-place Western - 66 points) and 67.5 clear of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on the men's side.
The third and final day of competition in Saskatoon saw the Gryphons reach the podium an additional nine times, highlighted by six gold medal performances.
Mark Bujnowski led the way for the Gryphon men, claiming his 5th consecutive men's shot put title and setting a new U SPORTS record with a throw of 19.08m. Bujnowski won in convincing fashion with the next closest competitor throwing 2.68m shorter than the agricultural masters student. Bujnowski was named U SPORTS Athlete of the Meet after defending his titles in both the men's weight throw and men's shot put. Later in the day, it was
Max Davies who stole the show in the men's 1500m as the second-year Toronto native passed three competitors in the final lap to steal gold with a time of 3:50.26.
Brennan Seguin wrapped up the men's gold medal performances in the men's pole vault. The 5th-year sociology major was the only athlete to clear the 5.02m mark to take the top spot on the podium.
On the women's side the Gryphons dominated the relay events, taking gold in both the women's 4x200m and 4x400m to complete their sweep of the team events after having also won the 4x800m relay on Friday. The women's 4x200m team, comprised of
Jacqueline Madogo,
Zoe Sherar,
Tyra Boug, and
Voneta Davis crossed the finish line for a time of 1:37.53, 1.4 seconds faster than the 2nd-place Saskatchewan Huskies. In the 4x400m it was
Sadie-Jane Hickson,
Nicole McKenzie,
Zoe Sherar, and
Tyra Boug who took gold by over 2 seconds.
Cameron Ormond opened the medal performances for the Gryphon women, taking gold in the women's 1500m after she lead every metre from start to finish. Teammate
Nina Whitford finished just behind Ormond to make it a 1-2 finish.
Over the course of the three-day national championship event, the Gryphons finished with a total of 28 trips to the U SPORTS podium (14 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze). For information on the 2023 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships visit usports.ca.
