GUELPH, Ont. – For an eighth straight season, the Guelph Gryphons are heading to the OUA Championship, and for an eighth straight season they will be taking on the Queen's Gaels.
Playing host to the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field, the Guelph Gryphons punched their ticket to the OUA title game with a 52-28 victory.
Coming off a 2021 regular season that saw them go a perfect 4-0, the Gryphons carried that momentum into their post-season win over Brock.
Getting started on the right foot, the Gryphons were able to jump out to a lead early giving themselves breathing room in the first half. Just nine minutes into the contest, Guelph was able to give the sold-out home crowd plenty to cheer about when Guerschom Mukendi scored the first try of the contest. With Colin Lynch splitting the uprights on the convert, the Gryphs went up 7-0.
Quickly adding to their lead, the Gryphs scored a pair of tries in the next nine minutes as well. First, it was Collin Smibert scoring the try in the 12th minute, before Evan Raymond tallied a try in the 18th minute. With one successful convert from the two tries, the Gryphons extended their advantage to 19-0.
As the end of the half drew near, the Badgers were able to cut into the Guelph lead. Scoring their first try of the contest, Brock got on the board in the 36th minute when Zach Zorbas crossed the goal line. The home side wasted no time in generating a response though. Just before the official blew the whistle for half time, Guelph was able to get the try back thanks to Alex Chaffey giving his side a 26-7 lead at the break.
As the second half got underway, Max Goodwin made his presence felt in a big way. Scoring back to back tries in the 42nd and 52nd minutes, the 6'2" Sociology major all of a sudden had put the Gryphons up by 31, 38-7.
Having built up a substantial lead, the Gryphons began to trade off tries with the Badgers the rest of the way. Following a 56th minute try for the visitors, the Gryphons responded only two minutes later with a try from Quenton McLean Lavado. Then after Brock scored again in the 65th minute, Guelph replied five minutes later in the 70th as Cam Hurst tallied a try. With the score 52-21 in favour of the Gryphons, Brock would round out the scoring with a Steven Medvesky try in the 72nd minute.
Heading to the OUA Final, the Gryphons will once again prepare for the Queen's Gaels. In the other semi-final, the Gaels had no issues with RMC defeating the Paladins 34-0.
Guelph will now head to Kingston on November 6th to battle the Gaels for the OUA title. Game time is scheduled for 4:30pm.
