Box Score ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Statistically speaking, the Guelph Gryphons women's volleyball team has put up great numbers this year. Whether it's kills, assists, or digs, the Gryphons have gotten the job done. But they had trouble keeping up the good form in St. Catharines Friday night. Guelph fell in straight sets (23-25, 20-25, 28-30) to the Brock Badgers at the Bob Davis Gym.
Guelph went down 2-0 and ended up giving up the lead in the third and decisive set. The Gryphons battled to extend it but couldn't pull it out, halting their four-match win streak with the first loss since falling 3-1 to York back on Nov. 2
OUA digs leader Tara Tanasijevic
Lisa Wedel led the team with 9 kills, while adding a block.
Alex Curran, who entered the night ranked third in the OUA with 236 assists, added 18 more, while the conference digs leader
Tara Tanasijevic had 17 on the night.
Guelph was in each set but had issues with execution as the normally sound team made 26 hitting errors to just 15 for the Badgers. After trailing 2-0, the visitors took a 17-14 lead but Brock produced an 8-2 run to go up 22-19. The Gryphons were able to come back and tie it but a slew of untimely errors would bring the set, and match, to an end.
The team will have to regroup to play a tough McMaster squad on the road in Hamilton Saturday.
Gryphon Take
"Brock played well enough to force us into some errors and we were happy to oblige. There were just too many and that tells the story. We didn't do a good job of handling their left side attacks. We had chances, especially in the first and third sets but we gave up runs of points at crucial times, which ended up costing us." –
head coach Paul Funk
The Record
Guelph is 4-3.
