WVB RECAP: Gryphons push win streak to six with weekend sweep over TMU

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's volleyball team has extended their overall win streak to six consecutive games, thanks to back-to-back, four-set victories over the TMU Bold on Jan. 30 and 31 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. With the wins, Guelph's record on the season improves to 12-6, with just two games remaining in the regular season schedule.

On Friday night (Jan. 30), the Gryphons women's volleyball team welcomed the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold to the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, for the first of two weekend matchups. The Gyphons picked up an important four-set victory, defeating TMU by set scores of 18-25, 31-29, 25-20 & 25-19. After dropping the opening set, the Gryphons fought off several set points during a memorable 2nd set, with Briar Crerar sealing a memorable, 31-29, 2nd set victory for the Gryphons to even the match at 1-1. The Gryphons would take each of the next two sets to seal a fifth straight win, with Guelph improving to 11-6 on the season and moving into 5th-place in the OUA standings. With the loss, TMU fell to 7-10 on the season. Briar Crerar, a fourth-year psychology and French major from Pickering, Ontario, led the way for the Gryphons, with the standout left side recording a team-high 19.5 points on 17 kills, to go along with 1 ace and 10 digs.

On Saturday afternoon, the Gryphons and TMU were back at it, with a 4pm matchup in a game that also marked Guelph's "Alumni Day" game. Just as they did on Friday night, the Gryphons would once again win in four sets, with set scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-10 & 25-10. After splitting the opening two sets, Guelph took control of the match with a dominant 3rd set (25-10). Fourth-year outside hitter, Maia Dan (Waterloo, ON), led the way for the Gryphons with 17.5 points (16 kills, 1 ace). Second-year middle blocker, Brooke Preszcator, was a presence both at the net (3 stuff blocks, 4 block assists) as well as at the service line (3 aces). Lexi Nicholson-Clarke (7 kills) and Ainsley Preszcator (10 kills) also made big contributions to an impressive all-around team effort by the Gryphons. With the win on Saturday, the Gryphons improved to 12-6 on the season, while TMU falls to 7-11. The Gryphons now have just two games remaining in their 20-game regular season schedule. Guelph are idle next weekend, but will wrap up their 2025-26 OUA regular season in two weeks with a pair of home games versus the Waterloo Warriors (9-9) on Friday night (Feb. 13) and Saturday night (Feb. 14). The OUA playoffs are set to get underway on Friday, February 20 with the OUA quarterfinal round.
