Box Score Waterloo, ON - Sunday afternoon in the heat, the Gryphons Women's Soccer team picked up a 1-0 road win over the Waterloo Warriors. With the result, the Gryphons improve to 3-1-0 on the season.
After getting off to a slow start to the match, the Gryphons would gradually get stronger as the game went on. Towards the end of the opening half, Gryphons second year defender Stephanie Moore (Mississauga, ON) was brought forward and came close to opening the scoring after a great individual effort, only to see her shot sail over the bar. In the second half, fifth year captain Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, ON) also just missed out on capitalizing on a one-on-one with the keeper as her shot also sailed just wide of the target.Â
Fortunately for the Gryphons, they were able to find a breakthrough in the 74th minute. After the ball was played into second year striker Kristina Strojin (St. Catherines, ON) with her back to goal, she was able to turn and face the target before sending a ball square across the face of goal. Ann-Carolyn Lang, or "A-C" as she is known to her teammates, then showed great pace and determination to get on the end of the cross and finish off what would prove to be the game's lone goal. Lang scored once during the preseason, but this tally marked her first official OUA regular season goal with the Gryphons. Lang, who was named
Gryphon Athlete of the Week, has started every match for the Gryphons this season, playing at several different spots on the pitch. The clean sheet was recorded by Gryphons second year keeper Holly Miller (Oakville, ON) who was making her first start in net of the 2015 season.
The Gryphons Women's Soccer team will be in action once again on Saturday, September 12 when they play host to the Brock Badgers. The match is scheduled to start at 1pm at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
