London, Ont. (January 29, 2014) - The Gryphons men's basketball team dropped a close 74-72 final Wednesday night in London to the Western Mustangs. Guelph drops to 5-12 on the season while the Mustangs improved to 7-10.
The Gryphons won three of the quarters, but it was the first quarter that was their downfall dropping 24-19 to open the game.
Daniel Dooley led the Gryphons in scoring with 15 points while
Andrew Grant added 12 points.
Greg Morrow led the Mustangs with 23 points and nine rebounds.
The Mustangs defence came out strong in the first half forcing 16 turnovers in the first half, causing the Gryphons to rely on their outside shooting. The Gryphons came out strong in the second half, tying the game with less than 90 seconds into the third quarter and taking their second lead of the game just prior to the three minute mark en route to an 18-8 run to start off the second half.
Both sides traded points throughout the final ten minutes with the biggest lead being six points, and the game would be decided in the final minutes. A pair of free throws by Dooley got the Gryphons to within two points (72-70) with only 1:38 left. Following a Western timout Greg Morrow put the Mustangs up by four with only 42 seconds left.
Trevor Thompson responded for the Gryphons less than 10 seconds later, however that would be the games final basket. With one second left in the game
Zachary Angus recieved an inbounds pass for a three pointer but it fell just short.
The Gryphons shot 40% from the field, while the Mustangs were a little better at 41%. Western outrebounded the Gryphons 41-32 on the night.
