In the Gryphons fourth game of the regular season the team traveled west into the Tri-Cities area to take on the Waterloo Warriors in the premier event of Waterloo's home coming. Looking to gain more ground in the standings the Gryphons wanted a clear cut victory but had to settle for a 24 all tie at the end of the match.
The scoring started early for the Gryphons in the first half. Â Flyhalf Sean Sinel scored his first try of the season under five minutes into the game as a result of the Gryphons strong defensive pressure that caused a Waterloo turn over deep in the Warriors end. Â Rookie Joe Newman was good with his foot scoring the first of two conversions on the day. Â Play see-sawed back and forth between the two teams before the Warriors were able to score their first points of the day with a converted try of their own at the 25 minute mark. Â Only minutes later, Mike Reid found the in goal area for the Gryphons to put them back on top and with a Newman conversion the team was again back up by 7 points. The lead would not last long as Waterloo scored another converted try before the end of half.
The second half was a near mirror of the first with neither team wanting to give and inch and play was back and forth. Â Waterloo was the first to score with two uncovered tries within the first 15 minutes. Â The second part of the half was all Gryphons as they took over play and dominated field position. Â Mike Reid scored his second try of the day and was followed by Mark Dinsmore who scored his first try of the season. Â Without a conversion on either of the two tries and no time left in the game the Gryphons had to settle for a tie.
The Gryphons were disappointed with finishing the game in a tie. Â The two additional points for a win could be critical for placing down the stretch going into playoffs. Â Putting the disappointment behind them, the Gryphons will begin preparations for next weeks game against the Queen's Golden Gales at home on Varsity Field.
