18241   Name: Alex Labaj
   Position: Head Lifeguard
   4th Yr - Animal Biology

I love working here because.....
"For so many reasons, we get to interact with our entire staff of around 60 members, and we get to cultivate acquaintances with patrons and staff from other departments. The job is also so rewarding; it opens up a lot of leadership opportunities, and it feels good knowing that you play a part in how things are run in aquatics/athletics. Our job is particularly unique as well in that we get actually get to use our first aid skills, and it feels good knowing that you’ve been able to help someone."

From working here I've learned..
"Valuable lessons in customer service and how to adapt to helping skaters at various ages improve their skating ability. I have also learned what procedures to follow in situations where skaters are injured and how to direct the general public to other facilities across campus. Most importantly, I've learned how to manage my time between school, work, skating and extracurricular activities."

18343Name: Chelsey Mathieu
Position: Student Manager of the Gryphon Field House

If you could give advice to students looking for a campus job what would it be?
Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. If you don't apply for the job, you'll never have a chance at getting it. It's important to gain the experience of having a job during school because you can acquire skills that you might not learn in other places or at later times in your life (i.e., the time management and planning of balancing school, work, and social responsibilities is something valuable that might come too late if you don't take the chance to learn it during your time here). Finally, having a job on campus gives you the opportunity to connect and build relationships, not only with coworkers but with those whom you interact with during your shifts. There are some things that you can't learn from books in a classroom!

18375Name: Sam Griffith
Position: Weight Room supervisor

What have you learned from this job?
I have learned it more than okay to ask for help if you need it. At work we have a great support system with our co-workers and managers. From simple questions, to dealing with clients if you are unsure its never a bad thing to ask for help.

Stef DavenportName: Stef Davenport
Position: Personal Trainer

Why do you love working for the UofG, Department of Athletics?
I love working here because it is like a second (and sometimes like a first) home to me. The relationships I have built in working at the Athletics Centre over the past four years have completely shaped my university experience and social life. I attribute much of my personal growth and development to my fellow Athletics department staff, the members of the facility, and to the passion I continue to build for fitness through my work in Athletics.

18451
Name: Rachel Keirstead
Position: Intramural Office

Why do you love working for the UofG, Department of Athletics?
I love working here because we have such a family feel in the intramural office. All of the employees are really close and work well together, and then we get to know the participants pretty well too. It is fun to work in a place where students can avoid the stress of school for a bit by coming out and playing intramural sports. As a student who is graduating soon, one of the things I am dreading about leaving Guelph is that I will no longer be working in the Intramural Office.

I’m proud to work for the best University in Canada because…..
My proudest moment was winning the growth and development and instructor of the year awards at our part time staff banquet last year and the year before.  I have been working here for 5 years and have put a lot of effort into expanding my teaching qualifications.  It was a great feeling to have that recognized.

18488
Name
: Sadie Ford
Position: Yoga, Pilates, TRX and Flex Instructor

I’m proud to work for the best University in Canada because…..
I did my undergrad here! I think Guelph is a very unique post secondary atmosphere, it is a safe and open environment where people are striving to be, to be comfortable in their bodies, to learn and grow as much as possible without so much of the "trying to achieve a status" mentality that exists on so many other university campuses.  I love that I regularly see wool socks and high heels walking side by side.

18554Name: Siobhan Rourke
Position: Client Services Representative

Why do you love working for the UofG, Department of Athletics?
I love working here because the environment is so warm and welcoming and as a student it can be hard to balance school and a job and CS makes it easy with a flexible schedule. I also love the active atmosphere and the constant talk about sports!
