Name: Stefanie Davenport
Position: Personal Trainer

What are you responsible for in your position?
As a personal trainer, I’m responsible for assessing clients’ needs through postural assessments, functional movement screens, and engaging them in discussions about their goals. From there, I utilize this information to optimize their training sessions through intelligent program design and effective coaching in the gym. When I am working to supervise the fitness centre floor, I ensure that all members are exercising safely and efficiently, and offer advice to assist them in their fitness journeys. Additionally, this semester I am honoured to have the opportunity to help train the varsity rowing team.

Why do you love working for the UofG, Department of Athletics?
I love working here because it is like a second (and sometimes like a first) home to me. The relationships I have built in working at the Athletics Centre over the past four years have completely shaped my university experience and social life. I attribute much of my personal growth and development to my fellow Athletics department staff, the members of the facility, and to the passion I continue to build for fitness through my work in Athletics.

What was your proudest moment in this job?
My proudest moment was the day I was given my hard-earned black personal trainer shirt. By that time I had worked in the fitness centre as a weight room supervisor for 1.5 years prior—all the while aspiring to one day become a trainer.

I’m proud to work for the best University in Canada because…..
I’m proud to work for the best University in Canada because the University of Guelph is recognized as an institution that consistently produces well-rounded students upon graduation. I also feel grateful to be a part of the team that welcomed the transition into the new gym since the day the construction team broke ground in what used to be a parking lot.

What have you learned from this job?
I have learned not only the importance of networking and building relationships with like-minded individuals, but also an endless amount of transferable skills which will serve me well as I continue on in a customer service position upon graduation. Working at the fitness centre has truly enabled me to emerge from fourth year as a confident and articulate individual. I almost entirely attribute my strong interpersonal communication, maturity, and time management skills to the opportunities I was given as a fitness centre staff.

If you could give advice to students looking for a campus job what would it be?
My advice to students looking for a campus position is to talk to the people you need to talk to and ask them the questions you need to ask. I promise the only regret you’ll have in doing so is that you didn’t act sooner!
