Student AT Orientation

Major Injury Care

General Warning Signs:
  • Confusion                                            
  • Dizziness
  • Vacant Gaze
  • Shortness of Breath 
  • Chest Pain
  • Nausea
  • Slurred Speech
  • Loss of Consciousness
Steps when Managing an Emergency
  1. Check the field/court of play For safety
  2. Block the person's head
  3. Check for responsiveness: Verbal then Physical
  4. Check ABCS (AIRWAY, BREATHING, CIRCULATION)
  5. Have a fellow trainer or coach call campus security
  6. Perform CPR/Use an AED if necessary

How to adminster CPR:
  • 30 Compressions (100-1220 BPM)
  • 2 Breaths
Tips for CPR:
  1. Keep elbows locked and shoulders over hands
  2. Aim for 2 inches depth
  3. Allow chest to return to neutral position after each compression
AED use:
  • Listen to voice prompts
  • Remove clothing
  • Clean skin
  • Ensure no one is touching person during shock administration
Spinal Injury
  1. Block the head and don't let person move
  2. Palpate spinous processes and feel for deformations/irregular bone texture
  3. Ask if the person is experiencing numbness and/or tingling in limbs (only if step 2 is negative)
  4. Test sensation by asking the person when they can feel you touching their arm
  5. Allow the person to perform controlled side to side head rotations and instruct them to only rotate as far as possible without pain (only if steps 3 and 4 are negative)
Heat Stroke
Cool person through whatever means are available. If conscious can provide water/electrolyte drink.
