University of Guelph Athletics

Insurance

The University of Guelph Department of Athletics and Recreation together with the Health and Performance Centre (HPC) seeks to provide all student-athletes with the best medical resources to prevent, treat, and manage injuries. We strive to establish a system providing consistent support to all varsity teams and members with equal and timely access to injury care.

Important Information about Student-Athlete Insurance Options:

As a varsity student-athlete you have the available insurance options as below and the HPC offers direct billing only for the UofG Student Health Plan.
  1. University of Guelph Student Health Plan: UofG students qualify for benefits through the CSA/GSA Student Health Benefit Plan.
  2. Parental Insurance: After exhausting your Student Health Plan, if you have parental coverage, you can use HPC receipts to submit claims directly to your parent’s plan.

***IMPORTANT CHANGE FOR 2025/2026

Please note that the Canadian Athlete Insurance Program (CAIP) is NOT included this season. If you wish to purchase additional coverage that extends beyond the TELUS eClaims People Corporation student insurance included in your student fees, you have the option to purchase additional CAIP (Canadian Athlete Insurance Program) coverage individually or explore other insurance plans of your choice.

For more information about CAIP and how to subscribe, please visit https://mkirsch.ca/home-caip/

Direct Billing Process for Gryphons Athletes:
  1. HPC will direct bill TELUS eClaims People Corporation (your student health plan) on your behalf until your student benefits are exhausted. For athletic therapy, chiropractic care, and physiotherapy, your student plan will cover 80% of the cost of each appointment up to a total of $500.
  2. HPC will email you a monthly statement so you can track your balance throughout the semester. No payment is expected mid-semester.
  3. HPC will email a final statement near the end of each semester. All accounts must be settled in full at the end of each academic semester. These balances will include any copays (the 20% not covered by your student plan), missed appointment fees (no-shows), or any balance once your student benefits have been exhausted.
  4. When payment is due, you can settle your account by phone (Visa or Mastercard) or in person (Debit, Visa, or Mastercard). Receipts will be emailed once payment is received.

Registration Required on New Benefits Management Platform (required for Direct Billing):

  • Returning athletes are required to re-register with new upgraded Benefits Management Platform to set up their direct deposit. You can register now at this link, with step-by-step instructions available here.
  • Incoming and transfer athletes will need to register after the class drop date (typically late October). HPC will send you an email reminder at that time with registration instructions

Parental Insurance:

Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to pay for any appointments once the UofG plan limit is exhausted. However, if you have coverage under a parent’s extended healthcare insurance plan, you may be able to submit your HPC paid receipts to recover these costs and fees from their plan.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER:

  • Once your TELUS eClaims People Corporation student insurance benefits have been exhausted, HPC will send you an email to let you know that any appointments moving forward will not be covered by your student plan and will be entered at the full fee.  These will need to be paid in full at the end of each semester but may be submitted to any additional insurance plan that you may have through your parents or employer.  However, we are unable to direct bill to any insurance plan other or outside of your UofG mystudent plan.
  • At the end of each academic semester, any unpaid accounts will be forwarded to the university for mark sanctioning.  This means that the university will pay your outstanding account at the HPC, and you will then owe the funds directly to the university.

Incoming First Year and Transfer Varsity Athletes:

For incoming/transfer athletes, you will not have an active insurance file with TELUS eClaims People Corporation (student plan) until after the class drop date which is typically late October.  You are still insured with TELUS eClaims People Corporation beginning September 1, 2025, but we are unable to submit your bills and claims until after that date. For any appointments you have up until the drop date, we will hold on to your invoices and submit them by mail on your behalf once the drop date has passed.

Once the drop date has passed and we know you have active files with TELUS eClaims People Corporation, we will notify you to set up direct deposit with the student health plan (TELUS eClaims People Corporation) so that for further claims, we can submit online claims rather than by mail.
