Anakin Guthrie (special teams) have been named Gryphon Football 'Players of the Game' following the team's Week 3 60-15 victory over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, September 12.
Tristan Aboud (Offence)
Tristan Aboud helped power the Gryphon offence in their first win of the season as this week's 'Offensive Player of the Game'. The fourth-year quarterback from Montreal, QC was efficient in the air, leading the Gryphon passing game completing 19 of his 24 passes for 341 yards and 4 touchdowns. His longest touchdown pass of the game came at the beginning of second quarter when he hit
Monroe Corniffe in stride for a 61-yard touchdown. Aboud also had 3 carries for 21 yards in the victory over the Ravens. The management economics and finance major with 362 total offensive yards in the win moved into 2nd in the Gryphon record book for most total career offensive yards, passing Jazz Lindsay's mark of 6,973 yards as Aboud currently has 7,177 total career offensive yards in his fourth season in Guelph. Aboud on the season has passed for 787 yards, completing 58.3% of his passes for 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Samuel Shoniker (Defence)
In his first career start in the Gryphon secondary,
Samuel Shoniker earns the Gryphon football 'Defensive Player of the Game' honours. The first-year defensive back was pressed into action at free safety and impressed in the win. The justice and legal studies major from Guelph recorded 3 total tackles and had a game-high two pass break ups. Shoniker played a key role in the defence, limiting an explosive Carleton offence to 269 passing yards, a season low for the Ravens.
Anakin Guthrie (Special Teams)
Anakin Guthrie is the 'Special Team Player of the Game' for Week 3. The local product had a good day in the punt return game, helping provide his team with good field position throughout the afternoon. Guthrie had 6 returns for 124 yards, averaging 20.7 yards in the win. His longest punt return against the Ravens was a 50 yard return where he was tackled just short of the goal line at the 6-yard line. Guthrie in his Gryphon career currently has 1,611 total punt return yards as he's 211 punt return yards away from becoming the Gryphons all-time leader with most punt return yards, passing Ryan Nieuwesteeg's total of 1,822 yards.
