GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2026-27 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Ela Jones (women's golf) and
Andreas Diogenous (men's golf) have been named 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' for the period covering of October 12 to 18, 2026.
Ela Jones (Women's Golf)
Ela Jones of the women's golf team is this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' after going wire-to-wire to become just the second University of Guelph women's golfer to win the OUA individual title. Jones, a fourth-year microbiology major, shot the round of the tournament at the OUA Golf Championships in Ottawa (Oct. 17-18) in the First Round, shooting a one-over 73 to take a three-stroke lead into Final Round where she shot a four-over 76 to finish 5 strokes clear of the next best golfer. Jones, a 21-year-old from Kincardine, Ontario takes home the Judy McCrae Trophy as the top finisher in a field of 52 golfers, joining her teammate
Jacqueline Giles who is the only other Gryphon women's golfer to take home the OUA individual title, with Giles doing so back in 2021. Jones in her four seasons on the Gryphons golf team has been named an OUA All-Star in all four years, earning first team status in 2023 and 2026. Jones' performance helped lead her team to a 2nd-place finish in the team standings, matching a program-best result at an OUA Golf Championship, with the Gryphons also claiming silver back in 2024 which Ela was a part of.
Andreas Diogenous (Men's Golf)
Andreas Diogenous made his move on moving day at the OUA Golf Championships to help the Gryphons men's golf team become OUA champions for the first time in 26 years. Diogenous, a transfer from San Jose State who is now in his first year as a Gryphon, made his move in the Final Round, shooting the low round of the day. Diogenous, a management major at the University of Guelph, shot a three-under 69 to vault up into a tie for 4th-place in a field of 78 golfers, earning OUA First Team All-Star status. Andreas was one of four golfers in the final round to break even par from Hylands Golf Club in Ottawa.
Andreas Diogenous alongside Will Drewery,
Caleb Shorthouse, Will Dodd and
Carson Skinner made their move in the Final Round, shooting a day two combined total of 292 to overtake the Brock Badgers in the team standings with a final team total of 591, edging out the Badgers by two strokes to become OUA Men's Golf Champions. The marks the fourth time in program history the Gryphons men's golf team have been crowned conference champions (2026, 2000, 1992 & 1984).
