GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2024-25 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by Core Power' series.
Max Davies (men's track and field) and
Jennifer Elizarov (women's track and field) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering March 3 to 9, 2025.
Max Davies – Men's Track and Field
Max Davies, for the fourth time this season, has been named 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week'. Davies is currently in his third year competing with the Gryphon track program and has picked up right where he left off from a year ago, where he was named the 2023-24 OUA Athlete of the Year (across all sports). In 2024-25, Max capped off his sensational indoor track season by successfully defending all three of his national gold medals at the 2025 Biosteel U SPORTS Track and Field Championships in Windsor, where he earned the honour of being named U SPORTS Athlete of the Meet for a second consecutive year. The management major from Toronto broke his own U SPORTS record in the men's 1000m, posting a time of 2:20.22 to successfully defend his U SPORTS gold medal. Davies also was able to defend his men's 1500m gold medal, crossing the line with a time of 3:45.77. Davies added another U SPORTS gold medal as part of the men's 4x800m relay alongside teammates
Adam Schmidt,
Dylan Ferri and
Alanzo Ryan as he ran the anchor leg, crossing the finish line in first place for his side with a time of 7:33.12. Prior to the start of the national championship meet in Windsor, Davies was also named a U SPORTS major award winner as the U SPORTS (Track) Athlete of the Year for his performances throughout the course of the 2024-25 track season. Davies' three gold medals helped lead the Gryphons men's track and field team to a 2nd-place finish in the overall team standings at the 2025 BioSteel U SPORTS Track & Field Championships.
Jennifer Elizarov – Women's Track and Field
Jen Elizarov takes home this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' honours following her sensational performance in the women's pole vault at the 2025 Biosteel U SPORTS Track and Field Championship in Windsor. Elizarov, a fourth-year biomedical engineering major at the University of Guelph, entered the national championships in Windsor as the three-time reigning in the women's pole vault at both the OUA and U SPORTS levels. Elizarov entered the competition at the 3.90m height and cleared it on her first attempt. She was in rhythm throughout the women's pole vault, clearing the next four heights on her first attempt, including tying her own national record at 4.25m as the Waterloo, Ontario native clinched her third straight U SPORTS gold medal in the discipline after a flawless performance. Elizarov wasn't finished after winning her gold medal as she was looking to break her own U SPORTS record when she attempted to clear a height of 4.35m. Elizarov's first miss of the competition came on her first attempt at the record-breaking height 4.35m. Following her first missed attempt, Elizarov on her second attempt, cleared the bar to break her own national record at 4.35m as her teammates and coaches came to celebrate with her afterwards. Elizarov's gold medal helped lead the Gryphons women's track and field team to a 2nd-place finish in the overall team standings at the 2025 BioSteel U SPORTS Track & Field Championships.
