SUDBURY, Ont. – For the first time since 2016, the Guelph Gryphons women's curling team has earned a spot at nationals. This past weekend (Jan. 31 – Feb. 2) in Sudbury, 16 universities from across Ontario competed at the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club in the 2025 OUA Women's Curling Championships. The Gryphon rink of
Jillian Uniacke (skip), Abby Parkinson (vice),
Liana Flanagan (second),
Monica Tanguay (lead) and
Sarah Woodward (alternate) defeated the Queen's Gaels, 9-6, in the OUA bronze medal draw, giving the Gryphons an OUA podium finish, while also booking them a spot at the 2025 U SPORTS Curling Championships Feb. 24-28 in Lethbridge, Alberta.
The Gryphons posted a 2-2 record during round robin play, with wins over Algoma and Ontario Tech coupled with losses to Laurier and Queen's. Shoot out scores saw the Gryphons advance to the Sunday knockout stage as the No. 6-seed, with Guelph defeating the Waterloo Warriors, 9-4, on Sunday morning in OUA quarterfinal action. After a 7-1 loss to the eventual OUA champion McMaster Marauders in the semifinals, the Gryphons were able to take three in the final end against Queen's in the OUA bronze medal draw, turning a 6-6 tie into a 9-6 victory for the Gryphons.
The last time the Gryphons women's curling team was represented at a national championship was back in 2016, when the
Gryphons won U SPORTS bronze (first ever national podium finish in program history). The 2025 edition of the Gryphons will head to Alberta in late February, with the University of Lethbridge serving as host of this year's national championships.
The Gryphons men's curling team will compete in the 2025 OUA Men's Curling Championships next weekend (Feb. 7-9), with the University of Guelph serving as the host institution for this year's OUA men's curling championships, with action taking place in Cambridge, Ontario at the Galt Country Club.
