NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont. – This past weekend (Feb. 7-9), the Guelph Gryphons varsity squash team made the trip down to Niagara-on-the-Lake at the White Oaks Resort for the 2025 OUA Squash Championships, hosted by the Brock Badgers. The tournament concluded with the both U of G teams winning their consolation finals as the men finished in 5th and the women in 7th.

The Gryphon men opened their tournament with tightly-contested 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees before dropping their second match to the Toronto Varsity Blues 6-1. On Saturday (Feb. 8), Guelph wrapped up pool play against the Queen's Gaels where they suffered a 7-0 loss to finish with a 1-2 record in pool play. The Gryphons, later in the afternoon, would match up against McMaster Marauders in the consolation semifinal where they won 7-0 to advance to the 5th-place match. In their final match of the weekend on Sunday (Feb. 9), Guelph would once again do battle with the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the 5th-place match where they came through with 4-3 win to confirm their 5th-place finish in the tournament with a 3-2 record.
William Trail (first-year real estate major from Toronto) and
Samuel Manley (fifth-year computer engineering major from Barrie) won three matches as they led the way for the Gryphon men over the course of the weekend.
On the women's side, pool play did not go the way the team hoped for as the Gryphons opened up their tournament with a 5-2 loss to the Brock Badgers before losing 7-0 to the eventual champions, Western Mustangs. The U of G team on Saturday (Feb. 8) would finish pool play 0-3 after falling to the Waterloo Warriors 6-1. Guelph would fall in their matchup with the McMaster Marauders later in the day in the consolation semifinal. The Gryphons would respond on Sunday (Feb. 9) in the 7th-place match as they defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 7-0 in the final match of the tournament.
Stephanie Woloszczuk (third-year psychology major from Toronto) was the Gryphons best performer on the weekend, winning three matches.
The Western Mustangs at the conclusion of the tournament were crowned champions on both the men's and women's side. On the women's side, it marked Western's first OUA banner since 2013. On the men's side, the dynasty continued for the Mustangs, with the 2025 OUA banner marking Western's 41st consecutive OUA title in men's squash.
