KINGSTON, Ont. – This past weekend (February 10-12), a total of 16 student-athletes from the Guelph Gryphons varsity squash program made their way to Kingston to compete in the 2023 OUA Squash Championships. The Gryphons men's team finished 5th while the women finished 6th after both posting 1-2 records in pool play.
The Gryphon men opened the tournament with a 7-0 loss to the defending, and eventual champion, Western Mustangs before responding with a 6-1 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees to close out Day 1 of the three-day tournament. On Saturday (Feb. 11) the Gryphons would narrowly fall to the host Queen's Gaels 4-3 in their final match of pool play to book their spot in the consolation semifinals. There they would defeat the McMaster Marauders 7-0 and go on to end their tournament on a high note, taking down the Brock Badgers 6-1 to secure their 5th-place finish.
On the women's side, the Gryphons opened the tournament with a 6-1 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, followed by a 7-0 loss to the eventual champion Queen's Gaels. On Day 2, a 7-0 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Varsity Blues would set them up for a consolation semifinals matchup with Brock Badgers where they would take a 7-0 victory. In their final match of the Championship, the Gryphons would suffer a hard-fought 4-3 loss to the Waterloo Warriors to finish 6th in the tournament. The lone Gryphon to be named an OUA All-Star was on the men's side, with
Andrew Chong (Woodbridge, ON) earning conference-wide honours.
