GUELPH, Ont. – A busy week in October sees six Gryphon varsity teams in postseason action with it all kicking off on Wednesday night (Oct. 15) as the Univeristy of Guelph men's soccer team hosts McMaster in an opening round match of the 2025 OUA men's soccer playoffs. The Gryphons baseball team head to Montreal for nationals, while the Gryphons women's lacrosse and golf teams both head to their respective OUA championships. Women's rugby and women's soccer will also begin their postseasons on U of G campus, with women's rugby hosting Brock on Friday night (Oct. 17) in a conference semifinal, while women's soccer await their opponent after earning a bye to the OUA quarterfinal stage where they will host on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18). MEN'S SOCCER
OUA Preliminary Round

McMaster Marauders (No. 5-seed) at Guelph Gryphons (No. 2-seed)

The Gryphons men's soccer team begin their postseason journey in the OUA playoffs at home, after finishing the regular season with a record of 4-3-5 (win-loss-draw) to earn the No. 4-seed in the OUA West Division. Their opponent in the OUA Preliminary round will be the McMaster Marauders. In their only meeting of the season from the Gryphon Soccer Complex on Sept. 14, it was the Marauders who came away with all three points in the 3-1 win. Last season, the Gryphons advanced in the preliminary round thanks to a penalty shootout win at Laurier. The winner of Wednesday night's matchup between the Gryphons and Marauders will travel to Toronto on Saturday (Oct. 18) to take on the York Lions in the OUA quarterfinal round. If the Gryphons were to advance to the quarterfinals, it would mark the second straight postseason Guelph and York would face one another in this stage of the OUA playoffs, with the Lions edging the Gryphons in penalties a season ago. In their only meeting of the season on Sept. 22 in Toronto, York came away with the 2-1 win.

For a second consecutive season, the Gryphons baseball team will compete at the Canadian National University Championship. The Gryphons qualified for the event in the OUA West pennant spot with a 10-2 regular season record. The tournament just like last season will see four teams from Ontario, two teams from Quebec and two teams from Atlantic Canada compete for a national championship. The change from last season is this tournament has adopted a double-elimination format (similar to the College World Series in the NCAA) where two losses for a team will end their run at a national championship. The Gryphons will look for redemption after falling in the national championship game last season.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament

The Gryphons women's lacrosse team will make the short trip down Highway 7 to the campus of Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo to close out their season as they compete in the nine-team OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The championship format has gone through a change where it's moved to a bracket style single-elimination tournament. The Gryphs will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed following 6-2 regular season record where they'll take on the No. 7-seed Brock Badgers on Friday (Oct. 17). In their only meeting of the season on Sept. 7, the Gryphons earned the 15-6 victory. The winner on Friday will advance to the semifinal round where the loser drops to the consolation bracket with the tournament wrapping on Sunday.

For the fourth consecutive season, the Guelph Gryphons and Brock Badgers will faceoff with one another in the OUA semifinals. The Gryphs have won the last three semifinal meetings between the two sides, with the winner of Friday night's matchup qualifying for the 2025 U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship in Vancouver, BC. The Gryphons defeated the Western Mustangs on the final day of the regular season to earn a bye as the No. 2-seed into the semifinals with a 5-1 regular season record while the No. 6-seed Brock Badgers went into London and pulled off the upset on the Mustangs in their 38-12 overtime win in the quarterfinals. Guelph and Brock played this season in the first game of the year with the Gryphons coming away with the 36-21 home win.

OUA Golf Championship

Nine Gryphon golfers will represent the University of Guelph at the 2025 OUA Golf Championship as both the men's and women's team will look to cap off their season with a podium finish.

Caleb Patry will represent the Gryphons at the OUA Championship from the Oshawa Golf & Country Club, with the top four scores from the five U of G golfers counting in the final standings. The Gryphons will run it back with the same four women's golfers who made program history and won a silver medal at last year's OUA Golf Championships.

The women's side returns the same four golfers who won a silver medal at last year's OUA Championship in Windsor led by Jacqui Giles and
Ela Jones. Giles, the fifth-year molecular biology and genetics major has put together one of her finest seasons to date with six top five finishes to go along with wins at the Fall Kickoff (Guelph Lakes) and the Gryphon Invitational as she looks to cap off her already remarkable Gryphon career as she looks to win her second OUA individual championship, with her first coming in 2021. Ela Jones has been equally as impressive in the 2025 season as the Kincardine, ON native has four top 10 finishes to her name which includes three top-three finishes and a win at the Western Invitational with a score of 71. The women as a whole have recorded five top-three finishes including topping the standings in the Western Invitational and Gryphon Invitational.

Guelph Gryphons (No. 1-seed) vs Laurier

After an impressive regular season which saw them finish as the top seed in the OUA West Division, the Gryphons women's soccer team will begin their playoffs on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) in a home quarterfinal match against Laurier at 1pm. The Gryphons earned the No. 1-seed in the OUA West following an impressive 8-1-3 (win-loss-draw) regular season record. Guelph is led up front by
Olivia Rizakos who led the OUA with 9 assists and 20 points and was the second leading goal scorer in the conference with 11 goals scored. The Gryphons and Lancers met twice back in August where Guelph earned a 3-0 home win before both teams played to a scoreless draw in Windsor a few days later. On the other side of the spectrum, the Gryphons and Golden Hawks just played each other last Friday (Oct. 10) where the Gryphs erased a two-goal deficit to earn a hard fought 2-2 draw.
