TORONTO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons field hockey team had three members of their team recognized at the national level on Wednesday night (Oct. 30) at the 2024 U SPORTS Field Hockey All-Canadian Awards. Abby Warriner, a fourth-year biomedical engineering major at the University of Guelph and standout midfielder on the Gryphons field hockey team became the fourth Gryphon in program history to win the U SPORTS Player of the Year and was named a U SPORTS All-Canadian for the third time in her illustrious Gryphon career. Michelle Turley has been named U SPORTS Coach of the Year after leading the Gryphon field hockey team to an OUA silver medal finish. Fourth-year midfielder

Abby Warriner – U SPORTS Player of the Year & U SPORTS All-Canadian
Abby Warriner is the fourth Gryphon in program history to be named U SPORTS Player of the Year. Warriner, a fourth-year player from Newmarket, can add U SPORTS Player of the Year to her resume after another impressive season where she was named OUA Most Valuable Player. This marks the fifth time a Gryphon field hockey player has won the award and first time since 2019 when Katherine MacMillian was named the top player in the country. Warriner this season has scored four goals and eight points, but her impact in the midfield is immeasurable for the Gryphons. The biomedical engineering major has the power, speed and endurance to play a key role from her the sweeper role for her team, especially on defensive side as her great ball-handling skills allows her to transition the play from defence to attack. Warriner was also named an All-Canadian for the third consecutive time capping off an impressive season for the fourth-year midfielder.
Michelle Turley – U SPORTS Coach of the Year
For the second time in her Gryphon head coaching career,
Michelle Turley is the recipient of the Marina Van der Merwe Award as U SPORTS Coach of the Year. Turley helped lead her team to a 7-1-2 regular season record to finish atop of the OUA West division, finishing with a six-game winning streak before her team would take home the silver medal in the OUA Field Hockey Championship. Her team has scored the second-highest amount of goals (30) and conceded the third-fewest goals (5) on the season with four players in the top 10 in the conference in scoring. The award marks the first time since 2004 that she has won the Marina Van de Merwe award as U SPORTS Coach of the Year. Turley was also named OUA Coach of the Year for the season. In her 21 seasons with the Gryphons, Turley has guided her team to five OUA titles and medaled seven times nationally.
Elly Peters – U SPORTS All-Canadian
Fourth-year midfielder
Elly Peters has been named a U SPORTS All-Canadian for the first time in her career. Peters, an accounting major from Kitchener, was one of the most productive players this season, scoring 6 goals (tied for 1st in OUA) and had 12 points (tied for 2nd in OUA). Peters is the captain of the Gryphons field hockey team is a tremendous leader on and off the field. She plays an important role defensively for the team utilizing her great vision and distribution skills from her midfield position. Peters was the recipient of the OUA Community Service Award and U SPORTS Gail Kim Award last season.
